Dash Deflector Idea Assessment

"Following our investigation into your idea, we appreciate the concept you have proposed and the perceived benefits. Our research suggests that there is a potential market for Dash Deflector and we have incluced the most relevant market statistics from this research below.

According to the DVLA in 2008 there were 34,390,302 registerd motor vehicles using roads. According to the Office for National Statistics, 4/5s fo the annual distance travelled in the UK was conducted by car. On average, Britons spend one hour per day travelling and 38 minutes of this by car. Cars are by far the most popular mode of transporation in the UK.

Our investigations have shown that the car accessories market was worth an estimated £280 million in 2007. Fleet, representing 52.1% fo the market by volume, constituted the largest segment of the UK car market in 2008....

According to Mintel, to the '100 Car Naturalistic Driving Study' sponsered by NHTSA identified 25% of crashes are due to inattention or distractions. On today's roads we often need more than our wits to ensure that we don't become a statistic ourselves......Furthermore, government research has shown that at 40mph, 85% fo people hit by vehicles die, compared to 20% at 30mph. The simple fact is that speeding in an unnecessary contributor to the number of casualties in UK roads. This preliminary research shows that that there is a defininte market out there for your idea.[bold mine]

Patent Search by Innovate Product Design

I commissioned Innovate Product Design to carry out an independant patent search to see whether or not my idea, or anything like it, has been patented. The patent search report consisted of 198 pages.

"The terminology was put through the relevant classifications, within commercial patent databases and 115 patents were found. Although all relating to your product. Many were technological blinds, incorporating shutters, rollers and so on. We feel that in terms of prior art, there were not a large number to be concerned about."

On examining each of the 115 patents none reflected the purpose or the design of my product. A patent does no exist according to the report for any product like Dash Deflector.

At the end the report did identify one vendor in the United States who had a similar product but it was not patented. It is entirely geared for the USA market with left-hand drive vehicles and is made of non-shrinking needle punch carpet. It is custom made to fit each dashboard comes in a variety of colours. The product is primarily aimed at improving the cosmetic appeal of the interior of the car - "adds dramatic styling and protection to your vehicle's interior" and "enhances the appearance of your interior, it also protects the dash from cracking and warping as a result of the sun's harmful rays". In addition, "it reduces hazardous windshield glare"... Looking at their inventory, only one of their products may do that, but it is debatable if it is as effective as Dash Deflector.
